Book review – Millie’s Marvellous Hat: Written and illustrated by Satoshi Kitamura

Millie doesn’t have enough money to buy one of the fancy hats in the shop, so the assistant suggests she imagine the finest hat of all for no cost at all.

Millie’s journey home is transformed by the colourful and fanastical headgear on her own head and everybody else’s as she travels through her neighbourhood in this charming twist on the Emperor’s New Clothes.

Muted watercolours are used in beautiful contrast to Millie’s bright yellow boots and coat and there are several breathtaking double spreads. Kitamura (Angry Arthur, Boots the Cat) has been a major figure in picture books for over 20 years. Will he finally get the gong for Millie.

Shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal 2010.
